IS SNAIL FARMING LUCRATIVE?

Snail farming is a lucrative agribusiness that comes with the rollercoaster of agricultural businesses that is on a steady rise in Nigeria.

Snails are nocturnal omnivorous animals, they feed once a day when the weather is cool and humid, usually at night, they are also seen to be active when it rains as the weather is cool, humid and less intense sunlight. They are hermaphrodites but they cross fertilize.

There are a handful of factors to consider when snails are in the picture, they might be few but are really important and quite indispensable;

  • Housing
  • Feeding
  • Environment

HOUSING

The snail pen is where snails are kept, and the condition of the pen is very crucial as it shields the stock from extreme adverse weather conditions, predators, and pests. And it always has to be moist and stress-free.

FEEDING

Snails eat leaves, succulent fruits, softened meat, even well-seasoned food. I’m talking spaghetti, eggs and whatever you can eat, as long as it is soft and less fibrous.

You can feed them cooked food that has a nice aroma, snails are attracted to nice scents and also love tasty foods. Actually snails find anything edible, as long as you can eat it, so far it’s soft, well scented and tasty, they too will chow it down.

However, you’ll like to feed them with rich, economic feed (feed concentrate or feed combinations) that encourages fast growth. I actually formulate feed (using similar ingredients to poultry feed richer though) to feed them.

Snails should have access to drinking water and be sure they drink it.

MANAGEMENT

Snails lay eggs that hatch within 2-4 weeks depending on the species of the snail, also the specie has a huge role in the size of hatching which could range from 4mm to 8mm and they mature when their shells-turns are more than 6.

Snails of interest to farmers are the African Giant Snails:

  • Achatina achatina
  • Achatina fulica
  • Achachatina marginata (biggest of the three)

Achatina achatina lays 80-350 eggs at once, one to three times in a year Achatina fulica lays 100-400 eggs about six times in a year Achachatina marginata lays just 6-14 eggs four times in a year

A system of farming should be adopted as well after the selection of species, selecting good feed, and adopt a good feeding pattern.

Snails reach market weight at 4-7 months, with good management and the range largely depends on feed and other outlined factors, good hygiene, feeding, and housing inclusive.
