Nigeria is the largest producer of yam in the world. It accounts for between 70% to 76% of the products globally. The same 2008 study shows the next two top producers of yam worldwide, Ghana and Cõte d’Ivoire, that only produce 4.8 and 6.9 million tonnes respectively.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture reported that Nigeria accounted for around 70% of the global production, which amounts to seventeen million tonnes with a land area of 2,837,000 hectares used for cultivation of yam.
